Best practices for online teaching

Teaching online is becoming more and more popular. Here are some best practice tips for teachers using online teaching:

  1. Be present and avoid distractions around you.
  2. Set your expectations of how the online teaching processes are going to work and what type of behaviour is expected during class time for different activities.
  3. Let the students do the work. Try not to speak for too long. Give them time to engage with the material, ask questions and have discussions.
  4. Create a supportive online community and set up smaller groups for students who may need them.
  5. Be clear on the feedback you give to your students since all they have is what you write down, unless you speak with them individually. Keep your tone clear and try to leave no room for misinterpretation.
  6. Ask for feedback about the online teaching every two weeks or so to hear how students are finding the process and address any concerns.
