Dr Tayyaba Hasan awarded PAESMEM

Dr Tayyaba Hasan PhD was recently awarded the prestigious PAESMEM Award by The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in concert with the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The specific award:

Individual category: Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) . This achievement reflects the significant contributions she has made to the field of mentoring and her significant contributions in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Dr Hasan is one of only 12 individual recipients for this year in the nation. Established by Congress in 1995, this award honors the hard work and dedication mentors exhibit in broadening participation in STEM pathways. PAESMEM spcifically honors individuals and organizations that have demonstrated excellence in mentoring individuals from groups that are underrepresented in STEM education and the workforce.

She will be invited to the White House to receive her award at a ceremony likeley this summer.

Tayyaba Hasan, PhD, is a Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and a Professor of Health Sciences and Technology (Harvard-MIT). The focus of her research is in photochemical approaches to treatment and diagnosis of disease primarily in the areas of cancer and infections. She has over 300 publications and 30+ inventions from research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense and Industry grants. She is recognized internationally as a expert in her field.

Dr. Hasan has had a long-term involvement in helping the career development of junior scientists and helped found the Office for Research Career Development (ORCD) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) where she also served as its first Director until 2011. The Posters of Excellence awards at the MGH ORCD Research Fellow Poster Celebration were named “The Tayyaba Hasan ORCD Posters of Prestige” given annually to honor Dr. Hasan’s contributions to mentoring. Her commitment to teaching and training has earned her the William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School. She is also the recipient of the National Postdoctoral Mentor Award, the Tenth Anniversary Mentor Award, from the National Postdoctoral Association. Dr. Hasan was recognized for her dedication to equity in Science, Engineering and Technology as a Catalyst Award Honoree from the Science Club for Girls in Cambridge, Massachusetts an outreach organization dedicated to encouraging girls from underprivileged background to pursue careers in science and medicine.
